National Vocational Qualifications

National Vocational Qualifications are for those wishing to achieve whilst in employment or training. The qualification is gained through continuous assessment rather than examination. MPEC offer NVQ Horse Care at Level 1, 2 and 3. The assessments are planned with the candidate and so progress is at the rate that suits the candidate rather than the assessor!

Assessment is on going with candidates gaining recognition of competency when tasks are performed consistently to standard over a period of time. The assessments are with the centre’s own staff with naturally occuring instances being used whenever possible, evidence of competancy can be gathered from a variety of sources.

NVQ Level 1

The Units in Level 1 relate to horse husbandry and daily routine, resulting in the ability to look after several horses on a daily basis with supervision.  Although there is no riding unit in Level 1, candidates are encouraged to take part in the riding session as part of their day.

After the course & progression

Progress to  NVQ Horse Care Level 2. 
&Care.

NVQ Level 2

The Units for Level 2 are a progression from Level 1, although Level 1 does not have to be achieved before registaring on Level 2. Level 2 has a strong emphasis on health; lameness, ill-health and injury, lungeing, riding on the flat, over fences and on the road. The Units are practical based with diverse evidence to support the theory content of the NVQ award. Candidates are encouraged to attend MPEC as much as possible outside of tutored sessions to ensure practical skills and knowledge are well established as the qualification is based on industrial
competance

After the course & progression

Progress to  NVQ Horse Care Level 3.
Candidates could take British Horse Society Stages 1 & 2 and
BHS Riding & Road Safety Certificate.

NVQ Level 3

The emphasis for Level 3 is on management, anatomy and minor ailments, transporting horses, fittness and specified diets. This award is for candidates who are in the equine industry rather than having a recreational interest.

After the course & progression

Candidates can progress to NVQ Coaching awards.
Candidates could take British Horse Society examinations.
